There is already an inflated pouffy arch bedecked with Halloweeny bats on the next block. My immediate reaction on first seeing it was "For the love of pumpkin spice, Too. Freaking. Soon."

And right on the heels of that, "F__k me, it has been a scary year, y'all do you."

Yep. I think I put it on my to-read list back around 2005 (when I was doing a bunch of encyclopedia entries for Oxford) and finally requested it from interlibrary loan this summer.

I had to laugh. Love it that non judgmental thinking won the day. I am guilty of already consuming 2 pumpkin spice lattes in the last couple of weeks. At Statbucks no less. I have been sinning right and left. 🙄

Oh, I picked up a PSL the first day it went on sale this year. ;) A Starbucks stop has become my reward to myself for going to the office, there being one in the same strip mall as the department. (And me being too much of a Taiwanese peasant to pay for on-campus parking, which means taking two shuttles from the free lot on the other side of downtown, so it's all too easy to tell myself I deserve a treat . . . )

I felt like that last year when people started putting Christmas decorations up November 1st. But I myself left our Christmas house lights stay up until February when the days were finally visibly longer. They cheered both of us enormously. And colored lights don't have to mean Christmas, anyway, so I didn't feel like I'd refused to take down the tree.

I just may put out a pumpkin on the porch the minute they show up at the grocery store this year, which means in the next week or so. I want to really lean into autumn.

There may well be a Christmas exchange before the end of this month: a friend I met for AILEY last week confessed that she already had my present and didn't think she could bear waiting until December, and I happened on something splendid for her that same day, so . . . /sparkly/
